What Is Online Tutoring

Throughout the last 15 years there have been many technological advances. Fast computers, robots, iPads, and Facebook to name a few. There is one advancement in particular that is a growing trend throughout education - online tutoring. We have heard many parents and students give explanations of online tutoring in the past. Questions like: Is online tutoring accomplished through email? Skype? Over the phone? It turns out that the vast majority of people don't actually know what online tutoring is. We thought we would explain it for Albertans who are curious.

Online Tutoring Is Real Time

Yes, real time. This means that the students questions are answered instantaneously. No waiting for a response via email. The tutor is engaged in a one on one real life tutoring session so that the student receives real, meaningful, instant feedback.

Online Tutoring Takes Place On A Computer Screen

In order to perform online tutoring, both the tutor and the student must have a computer or tablet with an internet connection. Try to imagine your notebook were to become your computer screen.

Tutors Write With Their Hands

Generally, no typing is needed to perform an online tutoring session. Tutors are equipped with a pen tablet which allows them to use their computer screen as a pen and paper. This also allows the tutor to write complex math or chemistry equations on the board with ease.

Students Can Write Using a Pen Tablet

If a student so chooses, they can also use a pen tablet to write on the computer screen. This will allow a student to write down the question they might have. The software also allows students to upload papers or other documents they have been working on.

In our experience, students who try online tutoring end up loving it. It usually costs less, there is no driving involved and the sessions don't have to be an hour long. Online tutoring is definitely worth a try.
