First I would bring the -5 in by multiplying the pieces in the brackets.

(-5 x 4= -20, and -5 x 8y = -40y)

This gives us

-20 -40y = 20

add 20 to both sides,

+20 - 20 -40y = 20 + 20

-40y = 40

divide both sides by -40,

-40y/-40 = 40/-40

y = -1

step 1 - open the brackets multiplying the terms inside by -5

step2 - add 20 to both left and right parts of the equation

step 3 - divide left and right by -40 and find y

First you divide both sides by -5. You get

4+8y=-4

Then you subtract 4 from both sides of equation

8y=-8

Last you divide both sdes by 8 and obtain the answer:

y = -1

-5(4+8y)=20 multiply ? factors in the brackets by - 5-20-40y=20-20+20-40y=20+20 add ? both sides of the equation by +20-40y=40-40y/-40=40/-40 divide ? both sides of the equation by - 40y=-1 voila!!

 $-5\times\left(4+8y\right)=20$5×(4+8y)=20

  $\frac{\left(-5\times\left(4+8y\right)\right)}{-5}=\frac{20}{-5}$(5×(4+8y))5 =205          (Divide both sides by -5)

 $4+8y=-4$4+8y=4

 $4+8y-4=-4-4$4+8y4=44      (Subtract -4 from both sides)

 $8y=-8$8y=8

  $\frac{8y}{8}=-\frac{8}{8}$8y8 =88       (Divide both sides by 8)

y=-1
