First I would bring the -5 in by multiplying the pieces in the brackets. 

(-5 x 4= -20, and -5 x 8y = -40y)

This gives us 

-20 -40y = 20

add 20 to both sides,

+20 - 20 -40y = 20 + 20

-40y = 40

divide both sides by -40,

-40y/-40 = 40/-40

y = -1
