In the periodic table of elements, Barium (symbol Ba) is grouped in group 2 and is known as alkaline earth metal. All the elements group 2 have valency of two. Hence Ba has valency of two, and it can form compounds like barium oxide (BaO), barium hydroxide {Ba(OH)2}, barium chloride (BaCl2), etc. The reason why group 2 elements (and hence Ba as well) are called alkaline earth metal is that the oxides and hydroxides of these elements are alkaline in nature, and they are found naturally on earth.

Barium is a chemical element with symbol Ba and atomic number 56. It is the fifth element in Group 2 (Periodic Table), a soft silvery metallic alkaline earth metal. Because of its high chemical reactivity, barium is never found in nature as a free element. The hydroxide, known in pre-modern history as baryta, does not occur as a mineral, but can be prepared by heating barium carbonate.
