F=ma

m= 4.0 or 2.5 kg

a= 9.81 m/s^2

Force is a vector quantity. It follows vector laws of addition and subtraction. Since both the masses 4kg and 2kg are accelrated in same horizontal direction, simple addition can follow.

F= F1 + F2

F= 4*a +2.5*a

F= 6.5*a

Value of acceleration(a) can be anything.

When a force pulls or pushes two objects horizontally, first you need to find total mass(m1 + m2) then apply Newton's second law of motion (Fnet = (m1 + m2)*a) to find the force. In this equation there are four variables ( F, m1, m2, a). You need to know the masses and acceleation to find the force.

For example: 4.0kg and 2.5kg objects accelerate by 4m/s2 horizontally, the force that causes this horizontal accelaration is;

F = (4 +2.5)*4 = 6.5*4 = 26N
