how do you find total mechanical energy?
Total mechanical energy = total potential energy + total kinetic energy, where
total potential energy = m x g x h = (mass x gravitational acceleration x height)
and
total kinetic energy = 1/2 (m x v^2) = 1/2 (mass x magnitude of total velocity squared)

The total mechanical energy is the potential energy plus the kinetic energy.
