Sertoli cells provide mechanical and metabolic support to developing sperm cells. They are in the seminiferous tubules and nourish the sperm cells until they are mature. They also provide a barrier between the blood and the seminiferous tubules (the blood-testis barrier), which controls the entry and exit of hormones and nutrients.
When sperm count is high, they release inhibin, which is a hormone that tells the pituitary to stop releasing FSH. This is part of the negative feedback regulation of FSH, LH, and testosterone. It also reduces GnRH production from the hypothalamus (so the pituitary isn't stimulated to produce FSH and LH).
