Exam Writing Tips
Below are my top ten exam writing tips. These will help you feel prepared and calm when writing your next exam.
- Breathe – If you get stressed stop, take a breath and calm yourself. Don’t panic.
- Write on your exam or scrap paper – Don’t work out everything in your head, use scrap paper to work out the problem. Also, write down important points or equations on your exam at the beginning so you can refer back to them later instead of trying to remember them all the way through.
- Read questions carefully – Read slowly and twice. The second time, underline important information and highlight what the question is asking you.
- Skip questions – If you get frustrated just move on and come back later (refer to step 1). Other questions might even spur your memory.
- Double check your answers – If you have enough time at the end, go back and make sure you have answered all the questions and that your work is correct.
- Ask questions – If you don’t understand what the question is asking, ask your teacher/proctor to clarify. The worst they can say is that they can’t help you.
- Manage your time – Spend more time on questions worth more (ie. more time on the written portion than the multiple choice questions). Don’t waste time on menial questions (refer to step 4).
- Show up early – Arrive at least 15 minutes early to get settled.
- Be prepared - Make sure you bring with you multiple pens and pencils, an eraser and, if needed, a calculator and extra batteries.
- Stay hydrated - Bring a water bottle with you so that you can stay hydrated during your exam. Depending on the restrictions, you may also be able to bring snacks into your exam to keep your stomach from getting grumbly and disturbing those around you.
Best of luck on your next exam!
